Bobby Ball was one of my comedy heroes. In fact, he’s still on my fantasy dinner party guest list; I’d have loved nothing more than to sit down with him, have a drink and just listen to the stories.
I was lucky enough to see Cannon and Ball perform a couple of times while on family holidays in Great Yarmouth. Back in the early 1980s, I even met Bobby on Britannia Pier and had my photo taken with him, a moment that stayed with me for years.
Debs and I saw them again at the Plowright Theatre in Scunthorpe on 24th May 2019. They were brilliant, as sharp and funny as ever, I pissed myself laughing. They had a Q&A at the end of their performance, I wanted to ask them who they’d choose to play them in a film of their lives.
I chickened out.
I still regret not speaking up.
We had tickets to see them in Scunthorpe again on 23rd May 2020. Then COVID happened, the show never took place, and Bobby’s death later that year meant we’d never get another chance.
Heartbroken. A genuine legend, and so bloody sad.
